Apple has been introducing new features in its every iteration of iPhones. This year’s generation of iPhone might have something new for the user. If reports are to be believed, Apple will launch at least one new iPhone model with a triple-lens rear camera.
According to the latest reports, the triple-camera setup is primarily employed for introducing two new features. The triple camera setup is said to be equipped with a 3D depth sensing and enhanced zoom called as “superzoom”.
As per Taiwanese site Economic Daily News, citing a research note from Deutsche Securities analyst Jialin Lu claims the triple-lens camera system will enable advanced 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision, with two of the sensors able to capture images of a single object from different angles. A triangulation method would then be used to obtain the distance between the iPhone and the object, allowing for more advanced augmented reality features. The third lens would likely have a longer focal length for enhanced zoom capabilities, according to Lu.
Yuanta Securities drew that conclusion after conversations with Apple supplier Largan Precision, which produces smartphone lenses for the tech giant.
The report went on to mention that the alleged third lens might possibly have a longer focal length for enhanced zoom function. The previously launched models like iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X feature 2x optical zoom. This upgrade on the 2019 generation iPhone with the long-focus lens might as well enable the 3x optical zoom. This feature will enable users to magnify the image up to three times without a blurry reduction in quality like digital zoom.
If Apple does introduce the triple-camera setup, the new iPhone model will be following the Huawei P20 Pro that had already introduced a triple rear camera setup. The Huawei P20 Pro camera comes with a 40-megapixel lens, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens, and an eight-megapixel telephoto lens with up to 3x optical zoom.
