Real Madrid secured a narrow 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie on Wednesday. The Spanish giants came from behind to snatch a crucial away win in Germany, thanks to goals from Vinicius Jr. and Karim Benzema.
Leipzig strike first but Madrid respond
The hosts started the game with confidence and intensity, putting pressure on the Real Madrid defense. They were rewarded in the 17th minute, when Emil Forsberg scored with a low shot from the edge of the box, after a clever pass from Dani Olmo.
Real Madrid looked rattled by the early setback, but gradually found their rhythm and created some chances. They equalized in the 28th minute, when Vinicius Jr. latched onto a long ball from Toni Kroos and slotted it past the goalkeeper.
The Brazilian winger was a constant threat for the Leipzig backline, with his pace and dribbling skills. He nearly scored again in the 38th minute, but his shot was saved by Peter Gulacsi.
Benzema seals the win for Madrid
The second half was more balanced, with both teams looking for the winner. Leipzig had a good opportunity in the 54th minute, when Christopher Nkunku fired a volley over the bar, after a cross from Angelino.
Real Madrid showed their experience and composure, and took the lead in the 66th minute, when Karim Benzema headed in a cross from Lucas Vazquez. The French striker continued his impressive form, scoring his 25th goal of the season in all competitions.
Leipzig tried to push for an equalizer, but Madrid defended well and held on to their advantage. The visitors could have extended their lead in the 88th minute, when Luka Modric hit the post with a curling shot, after a neat exchange with Eden Hazard.
What does this mean for the second leg?
The result gives Real Madrid a slight edge for the second leg, which will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 7. The defending champions have two away goals, which could prove decisive in case of a draw.
However, RB Leipzig are not out of the contest yet, and will hope to repeat their performance from the group stage, when they beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. The German side have shown their quality and resilience throughout the competition, and will not give up easily.
The second leg promises to be another exciting and tense affair, as both teams aim to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
