Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy has some harsh words for his former coach Eric Bieniemy, who is now the offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. McCoy, who played under Bieniemy in the 2019 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, said that Bieniemy’s intensity and aggressiveness do not work with the modern athletes.
According to a report by the New York Post, some Commanders players have expressed their concern to head coach Ron Rivera about Bieniemy’s coaching style, which involves cussing out and ripping players on the sidelines. Rivera acknowledged that Bieniemy has a different approach than him, but said that he trusts him and believes that he will be a good head coach someday.
McCoy, however, disagreed with Rivera’s assessment and said that Bieniemy is stuck in the old days, where coaches could get away with being abusive and disrespectful to players. He said that Bieniemy does not realize that times have changed and that players need more positive reinforcement and encouragement.
McCoy recalls his experience with Bieniemy in Kansas City
McCoy, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs in 2019, said that he did not enjoy his time with Bieniemy, who was the offensive coordinator of the team. He said that Bieniemy never really called or installed plays, but rather relied on head coach Andy Reid, who is known for his offensive genius and his ability to relate to players.
McCoy said that one of the first things he noticed when he joined the Chiefs was how Bieniemy talked to the players. He said that it was terrible and that he could not talk to them like that. He said that he noticed that all the players who had issues with Bieniemy were starters and that they did not praise him for his teaching or his coaching, but rather for his discipline and his care.
McCoy questions Bieniemy’s credentials as a head coach
McCoy also questioned Bieniemy’s credentials as a head coach candidate, saying that there is a reason why he has been hyped up every year but never got a job. He said that Bieniemy does not have the skills or the personality to lead a team and that he is just a product of the Chiefs’ success.
McCoy said that he thinks that Bieniemy will be a good head coach because he is good at holding everyone accountable, but he also said that he has never seen him as a coordinator. He said that he thinks that Bieniemy needs to adjust his approach and his attitude if he wants to succeed in the NFL.
