The reggae music world is mourning the loss of one of its most talented and beloved singers, Peter Morgan, who died on Sunday at the age of 46. Morgan was the lead vocalist of the Grammy-winning band Morgan Heritage, which he formed with his four siblings in 1994. The cause of his death has not been disclosed by his family, who asked for privacy and prayers in this difficult time.
A Musical Legacy
Peter Morgan, also known as “Peetah”, was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jamaican reggae legend Denroy Morgan. He grew up surrounded by music and learned to play various instruments, including piano, guitar, and drums. He and his brothers and sisters started performing as Morgan Heritage in 1994, blending roots reggae, R&B, dancehall, and hip hop influences. They released their debut album, Miracles, that same year, and went on to produce 13 more studio albums, as well as several live and compilation albums.
Morgan Heritage gained international recognition and acclaim for their harmonious vocals, uplifting lyrics, and positive messages. They collaborated with many other artists, such as Ziggy Marley, Shaggy, Beres Hammond, and Chronixx. They won two Grammy awards for best reggae album, in 2016 for Strictly Roots, and in 2019 for Avrakedabra. They also received numerous nominations and honors from other organizations, such as the MOBO Awards, the International Reggae and World Music Awards, and the Jamaican Reggae Industry Association.
A Colossal Loss for Jamaica and Reggae Music
Morgan’s death has shocked and saddened his fans, friends, and fellow musicians, who have expressed their condolences and tributes on social media. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness called his death a “colossal loss” for Jamaica and reggae music, and praised his “exceptional musical talent” that touched many people. Veteran British reggae deejay David Rodigan said Morgan’s voice was “so special” and his contribution to reggae music was “incredible”. Singer Tami Chin Mitchell said his death was “heartbreaking” and offered her deepest sympathy to his family.
Morgan is survived by his wife, Yeshemabeth McGregor, and their three children, as well as his parents, siblings, and extended family. He also leaves behind a legacy of music that will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come.
