The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a public university located in the Bellville suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It was established in 1959 as a university college for the coloured population under the apartheid regime. University of the Western Cape Online Application
UWC has an online application system that allows prospective students to apply for admission to the university. The online application system is convenient, secure and easy to use. Applicants can apply for up to two programme choices and track the status of their application online.
The online application system opens on 13 May 2023 and closes on 30 September 2023 for most programmes. However, some programmes have earlier closing dates, such as Bachelor of Dentistry and Oral Health (31 August 2023), BA Honours Sport Recreation and Exercise Science, BA Honours in Biokinetics and BSc Honours Biokinetics (31 July 2023). Applicants are advised to check the closing dates for their programme of choice before applying.
University of the Western Cape Eligibility for admission
The minimum admission requirement for UWC is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) Bachelors pass with an achievement rating of 4 (adequate achievement 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the recognised 20 credit NSC subjects (known as the designated subject list).
These subjects include Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Consumer Studies, Information Technology, Languages (one language of learning and teaching at a higher education institution and two other recognised language subjects), Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Religion Studies and Visual Arts.
In addition to the minimum admission requirement, applicants must also meet the specific admission requirements for their programme of choice. These requirements may include additional subjects, minimum marks or points scores. Applicants can find the specific admission requirements for each programme on the UWC website or in the UWC Application Guide.
Applicants who do not meet the minimum admission requirement or the specific admission requirements may still be considered for admission based on alternative criteria such as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Mature Age Exemption (MAE) or Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECP). These criteria are designed to provide access to students who have the potential to succeed at UWC but do not have the formal qualifications.
