Overwatch 2 Bans Top 1 Million as Blizzard Cracks Down on Console Cheaters

Blizzard is getting tougher on cheaters in Overwatch 2. The studio says it has taken more than 23,000 actions against players abusing unapproved devices on consoles, pushing the total number of banned accounts past one million.

New Tech Targets “Ximming” on Consoles

A big focus of the crackdown has been on players using a setup known as “ximming.” That’s when someone connects a mouse and keyboard to a console through third-party adapters, tricking the game into thinking they’re using a controller.

For years, this gave cheaters a major edge over controller players. Blizzard had warned offenders before, even shifting some into PC lobbies. But Season 18 changes the tone completely. Anyone caught ximming in controller pools now risks a permanent ban, regardless of their rank or game mode.

Blizzard confirmed that new tech introduced this season helps it detect unapproved devices more quickly and with higher accuracy. “We’re also laying down harsher consequences on users of unapproved peripherals, since the legitimate opportunity to compete using Mouse and Keyboard on an even playing field is now available,” the studio said in a blog post.

The purge wasn’t just about xim users. Blizzard says the million-plus bans also include accounts tied to aimbots, wallhacks, and other exploits. Even players grouping with cheaters haven’t been spared, reflecting a wider net than before.

The company admitted cheaters had found workarounds in the past, forcing developers to keep updating detection tools. Now, Blizzard claims its tech is more adaptive, promising “more aggressive actions” going forward.
